HOMEOPATHIC SALT PREPARATION WORKSHOP FOR CONTROL OF SHEEP VERMINOSES

The workshop took place this week at the Veterinary School of UFRGS, together with the Núcleo RuminAção and was organized by the teachers Raquel Raimondo and Beatriz Riet Correa. The theoretical and practical activities were conducted by Carlos Roberto Vieira da Cunha of Emater-RS and Angela Escosteguy of IBEM, for interns of RuminAção. In this workshop were presented fundaments of homeopathy and the students learned the correct way to mix the homeopathic medicine in the salt that will be offered to the animals.

To Angela Escosteguy "It's great to meet teachers who are sensitive to the current demands of society, offering students an opportunity to reflect and motivate themselves to try other solutions to old problems."
The search for new proposals to combat animal verminoses is growing, due not only to the increasing resistance and high cost of chemical worms, but also to concerns about residues in food and preservation of the environment.
This action took place following the proposal initiated in January of 2019, joint actions between IBEM and Núcleo Ruminação for the development of organic sheep in RS.

IBEM AND RUMINAÇÃO GROUP TOGETHER TO PROMOTE ORGANIC OVINOCULTURE

On January 18, the first meeting of the year took place to follow up activities on organic sheep farms in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The meeting took place at the Veterinary Faculty of UFRGS at the Núcleo RuminAção and was attended by Professors Eneder Oberst, Raquel Raimondo and Beatriz Riet Correa and also Carlos Roberto Vieira da Cunha from Emater-RS and Angela Escosteguy from IBEM.

One of the biggest challenges is to control parasites without the use of synthesized chemicals. For this, a set of actions is necessary: strengthening of the animals guaranteeing the well-being, quality feeding, selection of resistant animals and use of homeopathic medicines that promote the defenses of the animals. Bioactive and medicinal plants can be used to complement each other in more critical phases. In addition, actions are required in the environment such as rotation of pastures to reduce environmental contamination and also the multiplication of natural enemies must be promoted, which occurs naturally in properties that stop using pesticides and other biocidal inputs.

A recent study by the RuminAção group warns that the problem of anthelmintic resistance to all tested active ingredients is increasing and has been proven in several herds evaluated in RS. For this reason, it is extremely urgent to raise the awareness of sheep farmers and technicians working in the area to use control alternatives with integrated management practices to minimize the exposure of the animals to infective larvae and to reduce the use of drugs.

Several aspects related to the production, certification and commercialization phases of organic foods were treated. Several discussions about animal nutrition in agroforestry systems, pasture rotation, sanitary management and the use of homeopathy and phytotherapy were carried out.
